27 Aug Real-Life Back-to-School Tips for Busy Parents
Let’s be honest—August isn’t a slow slide into structure. It’s a full-on, high-speed cannonball into school supply lists, forms, early mornings and kids who forgot how to put on shoes!
So today, we’re jumping straight into some practical and simple back to school tips. Whether you’re a working parent, managing a household, or juggling multiple to-do lists (and possibly people), hopefully one or two of these will help you manage the chaos.
Pre-Pack the School “Drop Zone”
No fancy mudroom? No problem. Designate a labelled bin or basket for each kid near the door (or in the garage, if that’s where there is more space). Pre-pack it with:
- Backpack
- Water bottle
- Lunch bag
- Socks/shoes
- Activity gear or sports bags
Bonus tip – Install a hook and hang a Clipboard for permission slips & forms.
You’re creating a grab-and-go zone that avoids 7:58 a.m. panic.
Plan outfits for the week
Remember the days of the week underwear when you were a kid?! I loved those!
If you have a younger child that likes to plan their own outfits but it’s a time sucker in the morning, consider one of these fun daily outfit organizers ($20 on Amazon). Let them pick out their clothing for the week and save yourself the morning stress of rushing their inner fashionista!
Simplify Breakfast (and Avoid the Morning Hangry)
Create a rotating 3-day breakfast menu. Stick it on the fridge and prep what you can the night before:
- Overnight oats
- Egg muffins
- Bagels + yogurt
Bonus tip – Have a dedicated bin in the pantry and fridge for “grab & go” snacks.
Stock a “Sanity Stash”
Fill a bin or basket (ideally next to your “Drop Zone”) with some of those last minute items you might need in the morning dash!
Wipes, sun screen, extra socks, spare set of shin guards, birthday cards for when your kid announces at 8 AM that it’s someone’s party at 3. This is your emergency survival kit – you know better than anyone what needs to be in there!
For Parents of Teens & Older Kids
Here are a few tailored tips just for you:
Create a Shared Digital Calendar
Set up a Google Calendar or Cozi account that everyone in the family can access.
- Color-code by person
- Add school holidays, sports schedules, test days
- Include reminders for big deadlines (especially those with Seniors dealing with college preparation)
Use Shared To-Do Lists & Apps
Teens live on their phones, so meet them where they are. Try:
- Google Keep, Apple Notes, or Todoist for shared lists
- Co-manage grocery requests, school supply needs, or chores
This puts the mental load where it belongs—shared, not solely on you.
Empower Teen “Check-In” Time
Block 15 minutes on Sunday night to casually check in with your teen:
- Any forms due?
- Need new supplies?
- Upcoming tests?
It’s connection and logistics in one go!
Give Yourself a Grace Period
August is a transition month. Routines are wobbly. Lunches might be boring. And nobody’s getting gold stars for doing it all perfectly. You are setting up systems and sanity for the whole year—give yourself room to breathe.
With a few intentional changes, you can start the school year with more calm, more time, and way fewer frantic mornings.
